Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo from my dining room window. I am very fortunate at the wildlife that makes an appearance daily at the huge Japanese maple tree in my yard.

Time

I believe I took this photo around 11 am. I sit at the dining room table for hours in the winter time bird watching. My son had built a bird feeder in preschool out of a milk jug and colored it with a blue marker. Even though that thing is so ugly, the birds love it! I will aways cherish it because it has brought me the most magical photos in the entire world and it was made out of pure love.

Lighting

I love manipulating light. It is one of the things I am known for with my portrait and nature photography. I shoot into the sun when I can and try to use light to my advantage in every single way. I only use natural light, no flash. Occasionally I will add flare in Photoshop to make it more magical and appeasing to the eye.

Equipment

I shot this with my canon 5d mark iii and a canon 70-300 mm lens

Inspiration

I have always felt like photography is therapeutic. My husband was hurt in Iraq and I am in caregiver. In the winter it is hard to shoot portraits so I focus on nature. Birds soothe me. I love watching them, seeing their wingspan, their feathers. To me this is magnificent and freeing. It helps heal me and soothes me in the hard times in my life.

Editing

I always post process my photos. I love making my photos, even nature photos look like works of art. First I take my photo in to Lightroom and do basic exposure adjustments and make any necessary temperature adjustments. From there I bring it into photoshop where I have a very artistic workflow that I use

In my camera bag

I have a variety of house of Flynn bags that I am obsessed with. In my bag I have a canon 5d mark iii, an 85 1.2, a sigma 50 mm art, a canon 135 mm f2, and a canon 70-300 for my nature shots. Eventually I hope to get a 300 or 400 mm prime.

Feedback

Be patient! I usually shoot wide open but when capturing these birds I have to shoot at a 5.6 so that took a bit of getting used to. A fast shutter speed is your best friend in a shot like this. I also shoot in al servo mode to track a moving subject. It takes a lot of practice but it's worth it.
