Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the beautiful Tesselated Pavement near Eaglehawk Neck in Tasmania, Australia.

Time

It was during sunset hence the bright sky colour in this capture. We originally met for sunset shoot but clouds were blocking our show so instead we created our own.

Lighting

I used long expo technique in this photo. Originally planned for a sunset shoot but clouds didn't allow that to happen. But having some sun light helped the backdrop look more visible. We used steel wool for the spinning which also brightened the environment slightly and as planned the surfers looked as silhouettes.

Equipment

I used my Canon 6D camera with my Tokina 11-16mm lens and my manfrotto tripod.

Inspiration

I am a light paint enthusiast and I always carry my steel wool in my car where ever I go including some led lights and few other tools that may come in handy. Once our sunset plans failed we brought the steel wool and thought we would do some light painting instead. We took some photos just with the light painting. Then I noticed the surfers coming out of the water and in that instant I had an image in my mind I had to create with them and we asked if they could be our models for few minutes. Luckily they were happy to stay. This helped us to mix things a little bit and we could create this photo which includes, surfers, fire, slight day light, water reflections on the surface.

Editing

With this photo, I did minor changes in the brightness and reduced the noise and sharpened the photo. One of the photos that didn't require much editing and that's why it is one of my favorite shot on a favorite location for many photographers.

In my camera bag

I always have my Canon 6D and my Tokina 11-16mm lens and my tripod with me along with my light painting equipment. I also carry my remote and my timer which makes it better to do long exposure shots.

Feedback

For similar shots like these, I would advice to have your ISO down and F point higher so you can have thin lines of fire.Especially if it is not dark enough like in this photo ISO 100 is more than enough and you can keep your F up around 5-7 depending on your lens of course. Once you do few trial shots you will know the best settings for your camera and your lens as it comes as second nature after a while. I set my timer 2 seconds delay and I prefer to use my remote to trigger my camera. And if you are spinning steel wool it is important to wear fire proof outfit and practice before you spin to prevent any accidents. You can even first practice with party sparkles. Caring for environment should be your other priority. I always make sure I am not so close to the trees and bushes so they don't catch on fire.
