Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Hobart, Tasmania. This was also my first time out for night photography with my DSLR, while I was studying an online photography course. I was out to practise what I learnt.

Time

It was night time probably after 8 or 9pm on the 23rd of June 2013. Once a year we have Dark Mofo shows in our winter time in June and there are a lot of street activities including street musicians performing for visitors. I was just walking around and enjoying each and every performance and was trying to capture. As a learner I probably didn't get to set my camera settings correctly, which worked in my favour and therefore my shutter speed was a bit slower than what it was supposed to be for that time of the day. However, this little detail I missed back then helped me to capture this great photo.

Lighting

I didn't use an extra light apart from the flash my camera has. It was outdoors and few street fires were fired around and there were a lot of people standing around, I was walking pass and saw the moment and took the shot!

Equipment

This lovely photo of mine shot on Canon 60D, Speed1/3 s Aperturef/5.6 ISO/Film400

Inspiration

I follow some inspiring photographers and have got a mentor who take a lot of photos of musicians playing a guitar. I always thought it would be great if I could take a great photo like those professionals and as I was walking pass these guys' performance I had to stop and capture them playing. Because of this night's photography, I have been more interested in night photography than any other type and I am trying to specialise on it. And I am always online trying to learn new tricks and out to try them out myself.

Editing

This photo didn't receive much post-processing. It is originally coloured but I thought Antique Sepia tone made it look more sophisticated and the effects captured looked more interesting.

In my camera bag

At the moment apart from my 60D camera body my backpack has always 3 lenses with me at all times. Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II Lenses, Canon EF-S 15-85mm f3.5-5.6 IS USM Lenses and Canon 70-200 f4. Having said that I am about to order my second body and couple more lenses.

Feedback

It is always hard to guess when one would catch the most amazing moment to capture so, it is very important to have your camera around your neck and turned on. I never turned my camera off during this night as I didn't want to miss anything that I might see. Also, it is important to make sure that the camera settings are ready to go before starting shooting and your battery is fully charged. There are a lot of conditions to consider as well, for instance how is the weather going to be like, will I need my tripod and what am I planing to get out of today's photography. I am a kind of person I visualise everything in my head and when I am at the spot everything comes together. I look for the creativity and uniqueness, at least this is how I am trying to educate myself to have the eye for detail in photography. And as I mentioned before, I took this photo as I was walking pass. I stood there and waited for the right second to hit the button. And Voilà !
