Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken outside my village home, Llanfihangel-Ar-Arth, in Wales, one very frosty morning, in 2013. It was bitterly cold and I'd been awake for 96 hours with a chest infection. As it was impossible to sleep and I didn't want to wake my kids or the dog, I went outside for some fresh air. I never go anywhere without my camera, although I frequently forget my medication, and cause semi-panic in my adult-children.

Time

It was roughly 6.30am in late Autumn, and no-one else in the village was up and about, so I had this stunning sunrise all to myself. Not even the birds were awake. I stood outside for what seemed hours, taking endless photographs, until the dog started barking, waking my family up. By that time the colours had started to fade and dissipate.

Lighting

I was drawn to the colours and the way the entire sky seemed to be on fire. No matter which way I turned the sky was alight with this enormous cloud bank.

Equipment

This image was taken on a simple hand held point-and-shoot camera, and the only thing I did was turn it slightly backwards and down, to get the most light possible. I find this always enhances the colours.

Inspiration

Nothing, other than that it was there, and I knew it would soon be gone.

Editing

Nothing. I simply downloaded the photograph onto my computer. I'm not tech-minded.

In my camera bag

My camera is the only photographic equipment I carry. It's only a small device, so I never have to carry any extra lenses or a tripod. I usually find a wall, gate/post or nearby tree branch is just as effective at steadying my arm if I need it.

Feedback

Look up sometimes. Some of the best shots we are given come from nature, and unfortunately too many people don't see them, either because they're not awake, or simply don't look. And NEVER forget your camera! You don't know when you're being given a once-in-a-lifetime chance at capturing something beautiful.
