Thanks so much. The dog never moved from look-out for the whole time I could see them, and they were moving very slowly. All the best, Jeff.

Location
This photo was taken from the shore of Nerepis River, which is only a few miles from my home in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada.Time
It was a mild November evening and I wanted to take advantage of the calm and sheltered waters of this small river. I knew that these conditions would give me some great reflections.Lighting
It was one of my favorite times of day--just before dusk. In my part of the world fall evenings often produce soft, mellow lighting.Equipment
This shot was taken with a Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT, using a Canon 17-85mm lens--hand held.Inspiration
I was looking for a scene that would offer some interesting river reflections, when off in the distance I could see a small yellow boat slowly approaching. My first reaction was "great there goes the calm water", but as the boat approached I realized that it was moving so slowly that it was barely disturbing the water's surface. With the boat's bright yellow colour, the dog standing on the bow, and the amazing reflections, I realized that it made the perfect contrast to the calm monochromatic surroundings, so I thanked my lucky stars and started composing and shooting.Editing
I did only minimal post-processing--mostly brightness, contrast and saturation adjustments. In my camera bag
These days I carry a Nikon D7000 body, a Nikkor 18-105mm lens, a Nikkor 55-200mm lens and occasionally a Slik tripod.Feedback
The thing I learned most from this shot, was don't be afraid to let go of your preconceptions about what you are going to shoot on any given outing--be prepared to take what fate hands you and run with it.
