Musth is a periodic condition in bull (male) elephants, charaterised by highly aggressive behaviour and accompanied by a large rise in reproductive hormones. Testosterone levels can be 60 times higher in an elephant in musth than in the same elephant at other times.
To shoot a photo of a bull elephant while in musth is an unpredictable business. Took the photo all the same as it was too good to pass up. My camera settings were:ISO: 100,f-8, 1-250 shutter speed at 100mm.
Photo taken in the Tuli Safari area, Botswana. This Elephant was born free and remains free, the way that they should be, in the African wild.
