Terrific shot but I think a corrected horizon and closer to real size moon (ever if composite like this) would be a lot nicer.

Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in Dublin , Ireland

Time

This photo was taken in June, a few years ago, around midnight.This is one of my favourite images, probably that's why I have it on the wall. It looks very well printed on the huge canvas. I had this picture in my mind long before I actually made it. Ireland is not a place where one can expect to have a clear sky often, especially when you really need it. But that night I happened to be in the right (desired) place with my camera and surprisingly, the sky happened to be clear and the moon full also.

Lighting

For this particular photo I had to make two exposures. One for the city lights and one for the moon, simply because if you take just one exposure in a situation like this, with 30sec of exposure or more, the moon will look more like the sun and you won't like it.

Equipment

This was shot on a Nikon D300, with a 24-70mm (for the cityscape) and 70-200mm for the moon. A steady tripod was used too.

Inspiration

The idea for the final look of this image, I got at the moment of shooting it. After taking a few exposures I wasn't entirely happy with it.....I wanted to make the moon more dominant in this photo so I decided to change the lens without moving my camera and to take another exposure of the moon with a 70-200mm zoom lens.

Editing

All photos do require at least some post-processing. In this particular case I had to blend exposure of the moon into exposure of the tall-ship and cityscape using luminosity masks.

In my camera bag

It all depends on what I am planning to shoot but in most cases I have my Nikon D3x body with 24-70 & 70-200mm lenses + tripod with me, which I'm trying to use as much as possible especially for landscape photography.

Feedback

Try to have an idea in your head of what you want to achieve and be patient. If necessary, go to the same spot a few times until you can say "yes, this is what I want and what I was waiting for". Eventually you will be happy and prized with the results. Good luck and happy shooting :)
