Location
In the apartment building of my friend/subject. The black & white floor tiles of this former school building was the inspiration for this shoot.Time
Early afternoon. The sunlight coming through the window and door on the left side makes-up 1/3rd of the lighting for this shoot.Lighting
Oh yeah. The lighting is everything on this shoot. The aforementioned window and door on the left had white shower-curtain liners covering them (with white duct tape holding them) to diffuse the sunlight. There are two six-foot long florescent light fixtures that you can see overhead and I had a Vivitar 285 flash unit on a light stand (connected to my camera with a radio slave) to spot-light/illuminate my subject. The natural light and florescents metered out to f16 at 1/250th second, so I set the flash units auto setting for f16 as well, which gave me a range (from the flash to the subject) of 3 feet to 15 feet. (All of this was measured/metered for a camera ISO of 400.) With such varied light sources it was a good thing that I had always intended this to be a B&W shoot.Equipment
Nikon D810 camera with a Nikkor f2.8 24-85mm lens (for this shot, at the 24mm end to exaggerate the length of the hallway), a cable release, a Bogen camera tripod, the aforementioned Vivitar 285 zoom-head flash on a light stand with a radio slave and battery pack.Inspiration
I had not done a photo shoot of someone for a while and Halloween was coming up. My friend/subject came up with the black outfit and we went with a blank, white face mask so she didn't have to worry about make-up.Editing
Oh I did quite a bit of post-processing in Corel Photo Paint. I converted all the images to B&W. I used a mask tool to copy and paste a few sections of floor tile to even out reflections and glare and to duplicate some of the ceiling tiles to get rid of a couple broken ceiling tiles and a couple smoke alarms. I used the cloning tool to remove a couple exit signs, door knobs, and 6 wall outlets. ...and I adjusted the gamma and contrast of the overall image. In my camera bag
The aforementioned Nikon D810 and Nikkor f2.8 24-85 lens which I used on this shoot. I usually carry a 70-300 f4.5, a Nikkor 18-35 f3.5, a Nikkor 60mm f2.8 micro lens, polarizers, and a couple small flash units with a slave or two.Feedback
Planning. The location, the lighting, the costuming of your subject, (not to mention the removal of extraneous objects in post processing). It all takes planning before you even start.
