Behind The Lens

Location

Ramberg Beach, Lofoten, Norway

Time

16.12

Lighting

Sun was going down, it was clear

Equipment

Canon 5D Mark IV with EF 16-35 f 4.0 Mk II L series lens, with Formatt HiTech 0.6 (2 stop) soft Grad

Inspiration

We were on a workshop with Paul Gallagher (Aspect 2i) and as experienced photographers had been left to find our own compositions, which I quite like. However with this particular shot the other leader Michael Pilkington suggested using the river running into the bay with the black sand as a lead line to the mountain, which had some highlights on it as the sun went down. I thoroughly recommend Paul and Michael for UK photographers, like me, who want to improve. These guys are expert photographers, good teachers and good people.

Editing

I have a fairly standard workflow - always shoot is Raw and am checking the histogram in general and highlights in particular in camera. So hopefully exposure is fairly well nailed. Here I probably just added in a bit of clarity, perhaps took the highlights down slightly and the shadows up slightly then adjusted the mid tone curves to a S. Not too much. I rarely add colour, but if I have it would be vibrance : I never add more than +12 as it tends to look unnatural otherwise.

In my camera bag

When on a trip like this I take a second bond - a 5DS. On this sort of trip I will only have the 26-35, 24-105 and the 100 mm macro, obviously a range of Grads and Filters - all Formatt Hittech as they are affordable, a tripod and the Canon wireless shutter release.

Feedback

As I've said before you won't get any images sitting in the house. Always assuming having locked us down for over aa year now the Scottish government actually allow us to travel once again. I confess to getting fed up shooting the same scene over and over again at the moment, so like all other photographers am becoming very frustrated, particularly as I hardly ever encounter other people on a beach in Scotland at 6am in the morning even when there are no restrictions.
