Location
This photo was taken at Billing Bridge Estate in Ottawa Canada. This is a historical home with lovely grounds. I'm familiar with it because I've shot some weddings there.Time
It was late fall and quite cold so we had to shoot quick. We shot close to noon when it was warmest but that is usually not ideal light. However it was overcast so I didn't have to worry heavy shadows and racoon eyes.Lighting
Being overcast I like to add a pop of light to add more definition to portraits, especially closeups and getting a nice catch light so I had with me an Alien Bee 1600 with a 36" umbrella. For this shot I'd not have bothered with the flash. it was 1/180 f4 iso 400Equipment
This was with my Nikon D750 using the 24-120 zoom. Shot handle-held at about 65mm. I tried different angles and heights but the low to the ground perspective re-enforced the carpet of leaves.Inspiration
Zaharaa and I shot a few times already, so she reached out when she got a nice new dress with a vintage feel. She wanted to use it in a shoot before the winter set in. So we selected this historical home with lovely grounds and got a nice variety of shots including some of the fall scenery.Editing
The leaves were way more on the yellow side and the lighting was flat so I punched up the contrasts, and do some color shifts in Lightroom. Then for a little added punch I went to Photoshot and added a few floating leaves for effect. In my camera bag
I often move about at a shoot location, so I travel as light as I can. While I have a virtual studio in my car (extra camera, 2 flashes, several light stands, reflectors, softboxes,...) they are there for backup. What I do is access the situation and generally take with me a single camera, 2 lenses (generally my 24-120 and my 70-200 -- each F4 lens which are lighter -- I rarely need to do very low light, and often augment with flash so 1.8 lens are not something I covet).Feedback
I often say, "go for it" don't wait for the so called ideal conditions. Better to have tried and not gotten ideal shots than to have just given up on the opportunity. So even if it's looking cold, or overcast, perhaps even rainy, I head out and cross my fingers. Even if I have to cut a shoot short because of weather I usually have enough good shots to have made the effort worth while. Once you get used to shooting in any condition then you are ready for all events. A wedding, fashion shoot or family portrait is often scheduled well in advance. So learn to use any and all light to it's fullest.
