Location
This photo was taken at Smith Rock state park in central Oregon.Time
I took this photo at sunrise. It was one of the last shots I took before leaving.Lighting
A storm had rolled through the night before creating a really interesting cloud cover. I kept waiting for the clouds in the East to light up the biggest rock in the park. It never really worked out that way but instead I got this nice soft light glow you see in this picture.Equipment
This was shot using my Sony A7II, with a Rokinnon 14mm lens and a K&F aluminum tripod.Inspiration
I love central Oregon. Within an hour or two you can drive to the mountains or high desert. The morning before I had been in the mountains for an incredible sunrise so I decided to go to Smith Rock. It’s such an interesting landscape that rises out of nowhere. It’s really hard to take a bad shot here if the light is remotely interesting.Editing
I use a combination of Lightroom and Photoshop on almost all my images. I used lightroom to do the overall edits. Then I use photoshop for some dodging and burning to bring some of the highlights and shadows to life.In my camera bag
My increasingly heavy bag consists of a Sony A7II, Sony 70-200mm F4, Tamron 28-75mm f2.8, Tamron 17-28mm f2.8, Rokinnon 14mm (though mostly stays at home), Breakthrough Photography 6 stop ND, Hoya CPL, and a DJI Osmo.Feedback
Take your time. Sometimes when I approach a grand landscape like this I want to run around snapping everything cool I see. What I’ve found is that taking a moment and really looking for a composition that makes you excited is almost always worth it.
