I took this image at an old grist mill in Washington state. I am a self-taught portrait photographer that wandered into landscapes when I started discovering interesting places along the west coast.Time
I took this at around 9am on a very drizzly Pacific Northwest day in spring. The smell of the rain made taking this photo even better than I could ever imagine!Lighting
I am a natural-light photographer. Although I have a flash, it rarely, if ever, leaves my bag.Equipment
I shoot with a Nikon D750 with an 88mm lens. Nothing too fancy or elaborate...I work with what I have. I use a really crappy tripod (it was free) and it will have to do until I can afford a new and improved one.Inspiration
I generally shoot pretty well-known areas as of right now, but I try to put my own little spin on it. Different comps and angles often do the trick. Why shoot just a building when you can add a bridge for more oomph (am I right)?Editing
I shoot in the RAW and do my post-processing in Lightroom. I am working on mastering radial filters and getting my contrast and colors the way I like them.In my camera bag
The equipment I normally have are two camera bodies, a 50mm, 85mm, 70-300mm, 40mm macro, 105mm macro, 11-16mm wide, a good ND filter, an off camera flash, and a remote. I have had to lighten my load lately because my bag caused my back to go out...ended up having surgery (it's true...we suffer for our craft).Feedback
I shot this on an overcast day. As a photographer, I choose my weather very carefully for what I am shooting. I rarely shoot in the middle of the day because of the harsh light. I stalk the clouds. In fact, the only time I pray for clear skies is when I'm shooting the milky way or auroras. My advice would be to take your time if possible, plan around what the weather is doing. Good skies make for great images!
