The 180 feet tall fissure 8 cinder cone with one of the adjacent vents in the corner, pouring out lava at the rate of about 26000 gallons a second into the beginning of the lava river than extended 9 miles to the ocean. The cooled lava around it came from other fissure behind it but fissure 8 became the dominant fissure until the end of the eruption of the 24 officially recognised. The total land mass area covered by lava was about 9000 acres, in some places over 30 feet thick. The total volume and coverage made it the biggest eruption in over 200 years. Nearly 1 cubic kilometre of lava came out of the ground and over 800 acres of new coastline was created including 3 new black sand beaches!
