This Tule bull elk is feeding in a pasture at the San Luis National Wildlife Refuge. In the 1800's their numbers were between only 20 and 40 animals. Today there are 22 herds and number over 4,000. They were at the brink of extinction but thankfully, due to extreme conservation efforts, have come back in several areas in California.
