The Mesola deer present in the State Natural Reserve of Bosco della Mesola (1,236 ha), in the province of Ferrara, on the southern edge of the Po delta, are the only population of native deer in peninsular Italy, survived centuries of hunting and alteration of habitat by humans. This nucleus is one of the few in Europe to never be the subject of repopulation with specimens from external sources.
