Behind The Lens

Location

I shot this image in early October from a kayak on what is known as Cargill Pond in Waldo County in the great state of Maine.

Time

We were out on the pond kayaking in the afternoon and I snapped this as we turned around for home just after 4 in the afternoon.

Lighting

The overcast skies provided a nice even light and also kept the wind at bay, which made the pond almost perfectly flat.

Equipment

I actually shot this with just my pocket camera at the time- a Canon Powershot SX230 HS, freehand, no flash.

Inspiration

The fall foliage colors and calm waters combined with this interesting evergreen on a rocky point was a little bit of nature's magic in this light. I had admired this tree on previous outings but this was a great day to capture an image of it.

Editing

Although cloudy the sky was very bright so I had to adjust the exposure and tones to bring out the top branches and from a rocky kayak the horizon was off (one of my pet peaves) so I straightened the image but didn't crop further.

In my camera bag

In the kayak this day I did NOT have my best kit! Because I normally focus on shooting wildlife I typically carry just my 5D- now a MkIII- and one telephoto zoom lens, either Canon 100-400 L or Tamron 150-600. Most days I prefer to be light but sometimes carry my old 5D (or 20D) as back-up. When I'm out to shoot wildlife I don't even bother to carry a wide angle lens as my pocket Canon Powershot, used here, and even my Lumia phone can both shoot raw files. I do sometimes use my Canon EF 24-70 L lens for landscapes and close-ups and love my Slik tripod, but rarely have the opportunity to use it. I also toy with a circular polarizer sometimes but otherwise avoid filters.

Feedback

This is a good example of what I'd usually consider a "happy snap" proving to have some value as a in interesting image. Obviously the famed fall foliage of New England is what makes this image work. I really wasn't out to capture images that day, just happened to have a decent camera- as I always try to do- when I noticed something beautiful.
