Behind The Lens

Location

I was checking on the native plants in the propagating houses at work and I saw how beautiful the water droplets looked on the moss growing in the pots. The next day I bought my camera and macro lens in to work and during my lunch break I went out for a photo shoot.

Time

I had to wait until my lunch break at work so it was the middle of the day and it was quite warm and sunny so there was plenty of light coming in through the propagating houses. This was going to be essential because I had unfortunately forgotten my tripod.

Lighting

Since I did not have my tripod, there needed to be plenty of light so that I could use the macro lens hand held. I was lucky it was a beautiful sunny day! Photographing in the propagating houses meant that while the white plastic let plenty of light in, I did not have to contend with lens flare.

Equipment

As I was getting ready for work, I remembered wanting to take some photos of the water droplets so I quickly grabbed my Nikon D810 camera and my Tamron 90mm Macro lens. Even though I forgot my tripod, I was very happy with a number of shots I took on this day.

Inspiration

I was amazed by how beautifully the droplets sat on the moss and was drawn into the scene by the upside down reflections. Looking at the moss through my camera gave it a real fairytale quality. I played around with the depth of field and which parts of the moss I bought into focus. I absolutely loved this one because it really focused on one very small section of moss and the reflections in the droplets were quite defined. I also imagined the light patches in the background were fairies flying around.

Editing

I did very little post processing of this photo in Lightroom. I reduced some of the highlights, altered the contrast and the saturation to bring out that beautiful green of the moss. Processing of photos is something I would love to learn more about, but I hope this photo speaks for itself and takes people to the land of the fairies.

In my camera bag

I recently upgraded my Nikon D300 to the full frame D810. I have paired this with a Nikon 24-120 VR ED which I am finding is a beautiful versatile lens. Of course I love to take my Tamron 90mm Macro, but I also have a 50mm 1.8 and I have recently added a Tokina AT-X Pro 17mm to my collection. Other items I like to take with me are my Manfrotto tripod, external flash and wireless remote.

Feedback

I tried to make sure there was enough light to be able to take these photos without a tripod and to use on an ISO setting of 100. Though in other situations a tripod would be a good idea, I was lucky on this occasion it wasn't essential. For these photos I didn't want to worry about lens flare and other environmental factors, so the propagating houses was an ideal place, as the plastic screened the sun and sheltered the plants from the wind ensuring they were perfectly still. Always try a number of angles and depths of field to find the effect you want. I found I had to take a number of shots to find a few I was really happy with. Take some time and be patient and enjoy!
