Location
This photo was taken in late afternoon near the town of Okotoks, Alberta, Canada. I was driving, and came around a bend in the road when this beautiful great horned owl was perched in a tree, looking down on the world. Thankfully there was a place I could park the car and photograph the owl.Time
Late afternoonLighting
Back/side lighting. Sunlight was fast disappearingEquipment
Canon 7d, Canon 500mm F4 lens, Canon 1.4 teleconverter. Open car window, braced myself & shot a number of frames. Considered this one the best. It helped that this lens has 2 stops of image stabilizationInspiration

Noise reduction, some cropping, adjusted colour, lightened bird a bitIn my camera bag

Drive slowly (when it is safe to do so, such as rural area) and observe carefully. Study animals' behaviour. Have your equipment ready and easily accessible. Know your equipment. Be patient; if you have the time hang around as animal may do something interesting. Do not harass subject; stay back and let animal act naturally. Enjoy the experience . . . it is wonderful to see a bird, bear or moose!!!!
