Location
I took this on the Grand union canal in the village of CosgroveTime
Taken in the early hours of the morning as I was going to work.Lighting
I was quite lucky with the lighting as the birds were lit by a sunbeam while they were in the shade of the trees so it didn't take much to get the above result!Equipment
At the time I had a Canon 7D and was using a 100 - 400 Canon lens. Taken without a tripod, as with most of my pictures, I like to take them handheldInspiration
Purely for the beauty of the subject, and the lighting.Editing
Very little processing was involved in this shot, all I had to do was increase the contrast to darken the background. In my camera bag
That depends on where I am going and what I want to do. If I am just out for a walk round the aria looking for the local wildlife, then I take my Canon 5D with the Canon 100-400 lens. For macro I take my Canon 70D with the Canon 100 mm macro lens. If I'm on a trip, I will take both cameras. I don't like to have to much with me as I've got to carry it!Feedback
Always use spot metering when you are taking a shot of a white bird otherwise you will probably over expose the subject. Lighting is, important, especially with something like this shot. I waited till the two birds went under the trees on the bank of the canal, this gave me the dark background for the shot, and then waited a short while for the sun to hit them fully. Mostly, be ready, you never know what you will see!
