Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Mpumalanga, South Africa.

Time

In South Africa, the sunsets seem to be spectacular on a regular basis. This time, I happened to be "armed" with my camera.

Lighting

I think that's the interesting thing about this picture. The lighting was perfect.

Equipment

I am pretty sure I used a canon 70 - 200mm 2.8 lens with an EOS70D body.

Inspiration

I love silhouettes and there are many beautiful trees in this part of South Africa. So combining the sunset with the detail of the tree made a nice combination.

Editing

I increased the saturation so the oranges popped as well as the contrast for the the detail on the tree.

In my camera bag

In South Africa, you can rent equipment relatively cheap. I use my EOS70D body and own a 70-200mm 2.8, 17-40 2.8 and a 40-70 2.8. What I often due is rent lenses. My favorite is the Canon 400 2.8 prime lens. It allows for some incredible detail for wildlife. My family has been on assignment in South Africa for 2 years and we plan on being her for another year, so I plan on making the most of the time as it relates to photography.

Feedback

Buy a plane ticket to South Africa, fly into Joberg, then take a short flight to a small airport called KMI in Nelpruit. Book a car there, and head towards the Numbi Gate of Kruger National Park. You'll need your passport. Drive around and see amazing animals and landscape. Wait until the end of the day and scope out a lone tree with good detail. Take lots of pictures. You can stay in Kruger, but you'll need to also book a reservation at one of the rest camps. :)
