Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Kruger National Park, South Africa.

Time

This photo was taken in the early afternoon. We were on a dirt road by ourselves when we came across this cheetah. It was a very active male.

Lighting

Since it was not the best time of the day for soft light and the sun was prominently above us, I used a super zoom to try and avoid the harsh lighting and to get very close to the subject. I was lucky to have had some shade from the tree to help.

Equipment

Shot out of my vehicle using a bean bag and a 400mm 2.8 canon prime lens with an EOS 70D.

Inspiration

I love wildlife photography, so we go "hunting" as often as possible to try and locate unique sightings in South Africa.

Editing

Because we were so close, it didn't require much post processing. I think I may have moved the sharpness up slightly.

In my camera bag

I now have two canon bodies. EOS 5Diii and SR. I don't keep the 400mm in my bag because it's a monster but I bring a 2x extender as well as 70 - 200mm 2.8. I do bring other lenses for landscape but the two I mentioned are my go to for wildlife.

Feedback

Time and patience. The more time you spend the more your chances for success increase. I think you really have to have a passion for it as we have spent many hours on shoots. But when that time comes, it's magical!
