The symmetry in pattern was breath taking. To convert Pearl white colour of the petals in to the photograph was a challenge. Only two shades of colours (and very little third and fourth one) also catches the attraction.

Behind The Lens

Location

It was clicked in a flower show.

Time

It was in a closed auditorium- with halogen lamps everywhere.

Lighting

When I started clicking this particular flower, I was not satisfied with the colours reproduced in the final image. The halogen lamps in the exhibition hall were not doing justice to the original colours of the flower. But then I accepted the challenge of getting that original ’pearl’ shade of the petals in the final image. I knew that since I was shooting in JPEG, there was hardly anything I could do in post processing. Suddenly an idea struck me. I leaned over the flower, covered it with my shadow to reduce yellow colour cast added by the halogen lamps and then used auto white balance. Now the light was too low. There was a limitation on increasing the ISO as well as opening the aperture; so no alternative but to reduce the shutter speed drastically to get proper exposure. But then I was not carrying tripod. ….. a chain of challenges, one after another, started shaking up my confidence…. Finally after lots of physical and mental efforts, I managed to ‘make’ this superb photograph. Now I learnt the ‘recipe’ of clicking in that situation. Later on I got some very good pictures in that show; close-up of a ‘Cactus’ is one of the many, which I shall upload on my wall very soon for Viewbug members.

Equipment

Nikon D5200, I used my kit lens- 18-55mm, which came along with the camera. -- Without tripod and flash.

Inspiration

That unusual pearl shade of petals inspired me to take this photo. All in one Challenges in terms of setting of white balance, Aperture, ISO, shutter speed (as I was shooting hand held) - I knew that since I was shooting in JPEG, there was hardly anything I could do in post processing.

Editing

Till date I had neither handled any DSLR nor I had any experience of shooting RAW images or in processing them. Since it was my first day of handing DSLR, I decided to shoot in JPEG. Basic post processing like sharpening, cropping, highlight/ shadow adjustments were done in Nikon software.

In my camera bag

I always carry 18-55 mm, 55-300mm lenses & macro lens, point and shoot camera. Also I carry extra memory card & charged battery with charger. Polarizing and ND filters, monopod/ tripod (depending on assignment)

Feedback

For every click you plan, always remember basics of the photography. In this type of photo, DOF is a important, so first set aperture and then adjust shutter speed and ISO to get proper exposure. Also adjusting white balance in camera settings- before shooting- is important. It will give better control over colour cast during post processing.
