Location
This photo was taken on a beach in Lantzville on Vancouver Island, Canada with one of my favourite models, Shannon Alce.Time
From what I can remember this was taken sometime between 1-3p.m. in January! It was such a cold day but Shannon is a trooper!Lighting
I didn't use any lighting equipment and was thankful for the cloudy day we had! The light was diffused by the clouds and I didn't need to use any fill.Equipment
I photographed this with a Canon 5D Mark II, a tripod and a Canon 85mm 1.8 lens.Inspiration
I have been inspired lately by the work of Emily Soto, Amanda Diaz, Brooke Shaden and surreal art. I wanted to achieve something that was more than just a nice portrait. This was my first time compositing and wanted to starting adding something extra to my images!Editing
I did 4 hours of compositing and other post processing techniques. I mainly used Adobe Photoshop and cut each image I had taken of the garment on top of the original image and blended them in. I also had taken multiple shots of the hair being flipped in the air and composited that as well! After adjusting the hue, colour, played with gradient maps, solid colour layers and more, I finished it off with my watermark! I actually recorded the whole process and posted a speed run/time lapse of it! You can check it out here; https://www.patreon.com/creation?hid=1575138In my camera bag
I normally don't like to carry a lot of equipment since I don't always have an assistant and prefer to keep it minimal. I usually carry my Camera, 70-200mm, 85mm, 50mm, cleaning cloth, spare battery and extra memory cards. I also like to keep extra props in the trunk of my car (flowers, jewellery).Feedback
If you are trying to composite a dress to look like this then you will want to take the original bottom image first. Take the image of the model with the dress on in the pose you want to use. Afterwords, have her take off the dress and fling the dress in the air (you will be using these images to make the dress look much bigger). Also, if you are wanting the hair to look like it is flowing the wind, put your camera on a tripod and stand beside the model with a remote timer (or use an assistant). Take pictures of you flinging the models hair in the air and later on in photoshop cut the hair out that you want to use (I used multiple hair images).
