Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Elberta AL. on a quiet back road in the country. I only had to dodge one car and no dominoes where hurt in the making of this image.

Time

This images was taken around four pm. I got the idea while at work I had been trying to come up with a suitable idea for the shallow depth of field contest. Being part of the ViewBug community has really pushed me to be more creative in that aspect. With every new contest there is another reason to think outside the box, while still having a solid concept to build from.

Lighting

The light used was all natural however I did use a scrim to help the with overall exposure.

Equipment

I used my trusty canon 1ds mark ii with a sigma 50 mm prime lens. This was done half hand held and half resting the camera on the yellow lines of the road. I used the scrim in my five in one reflector to keep the white dominoes from over exposing.

Inspiration

My inspiration hmmm well the ViewBug contests deserves a portion of the credit. More then a few of my creative shots came from racking my brains looking for ideas for the contests. I like to try and put things in places they would not normally be seen and I knew I wanted to use the double yellow lines. So I thought about things that don't belong in the road. I shared this image with my mother soon after I posted it. She was quick to say how great and creative it was then a long pause as it sank in that I was laying on the road to get the shot. Then a even longer lecture about playing in the street ( did I mention I am 35 years old ). So while I am on the subject thank you mom for continuing to hang my art on the refrigerator.

Editing

The editing was pretty minimal due to the sigmas brilliant color reproduction. I added a bit of saturation and slight tone mapping.

In my camera bag

I carry my canon 1ds mark ii, sigma 50 mm prime , canon 70 to 200 l, token 18 to 35, Yongnuo YN 560 flash gun, 5 in one reflector, tripod kokin filter holder, nd filters, extra battery's,

Feedback

Try to use contests to add creativity and focus to your photography some times limiting yourself to one color or one concept can give you infinite new ideas. Practice , practice , practice , practice..... Oh and never do it in heavy traffic.
