Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on location, at a local Animal Rescue (S.M.A.R.T. Inc. [Southern Minnesota Animal Rescue Team]). The rescue head lives on a farm and also fosters several dogs there.

Time

The photo was taken mid-afternoon.

Lighting

Because it was mid-afternoon I had to consider the harshness of the bright sunlight, and opted for a little shade underneath a tree. Malibu (pictured) must have agreed with my decision because she did a joyful roll in the grass, complete with extra fabulous smile!

Equipment

My very first DSLR - a Nikon D3100 (and patience)

Inspiration

I *had* to capture that joy (isn't that what dogs do best!?). I was very fortunate with timing - when Malibu began her joyful roll in the grass, I was simply quick enough to get down on the ground (completely laying flat) and catch it.

Editing

I don't recall the specifics, though I'm certain post-processing happened in Lightroom. At a guess, I'd say a tad of sharpening and perhaps a bit of cropping.

In my camera bag

D7100 and a Nikon 18-200.

Feedback

When Capturing dogs, I find it best to let their personalities shine through simply by being themselves, rather than trying to contrive a shot. Get down on their level, or completely flat on the ground, and let the magic happen. Lastly, enjoy and have fun!
