Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in my backyard while doing a mini-shoot of my daughter Camryn. Most pictures of my family are done in my backyard. I love capturing special moments in a place a lot of great memories are made.

Time

This was taken during the glorious Golden Hour, my absolute favorite time of day!

Lighting

VERY rarely do I ever use flash. Natural light always looks best in my opinion. Lighting during golden hour can't be beat!

Equipment

This was shot with a Canon 5D Mark ii with a Canon 1.4 50mm in natural light.

Inspiration

Sadie, my dog, follows my daughter Camryn everywhere and is always curious when I am pointing a camera at her. I happened to look over at her and thought she looked beautiful, so I captured the moment. Our dog is part of our family so her portraits are just as important to me as any other member of my family.

Editing

This particular image was shot in RAW and processed in Adobe Camera Raw.

In my camera bag

I have my Canon 5D Mark ii and a Canon 1.4 50mm at all times. I also have a Canon 28-135mm, and a Tamron 70-300mm but do not use them nearly as much! Of course I carry extra batteries and memory cards as well!

Feedback

A photography teacher I once had always used to tell us not to over think a photograph. I always felt "boring" as other students were turning in landscape shots or action shots. My thing is more about portraits. I love capturing the essence of a person on camera. This simple shot of my girl Sadie will forever secure her memory in my heart and mind. When I look at it, I see a beautiful, confident, strong protector of my daughter Camryn. My advice is find what you are passionate about and just shoot. Don't under-estimate the importance of a "simple" photograph.
