Location
I took this photo in my front yard.Time
I believe this was taken around 3:00 or 4:00 in the afternoon.Lighting
As I mentioned, this was taken around 3:00 or 4:00 and that time of day (during that season) was perfect. I do not like to use flash so the more natural light I have, the happier I am!Equipment
I use a Canon 5D Mark ii and on this particular day, I was using my Tamron SP 70-300mm f/4-5.6.Inspiration
I had just gotten my zoom lens as a gift and was playing around. I happened to look over at just the right time and captured these two interacting. My dog, Sadie, is never far from Camryn. I love that Camryn has a protector by her side at all times. I think this image reflects their relationship perfectly and is actually one of my all-time favorites I have captured to date.Editing
I use Photoshop CS6 and always start with hand edits. In this image, I removed a "no parking" sign and my mail box. I believe I cropped in as well. As much as I like to get it right in-camera, I felt I was a bit too zoomed out from them in the SOOC image and I also felt the sign and mailbox were too big of a distraction. I used an Photoshop black and white action and then tweeked the layers to my liking. In my camera bag
I only have one camera body and that is the Canon 5D Mark ii. Although I love my zoom lens, I hardly ever have it on me, except for when I go to the San Diego Zoo or Wild Animal Park for nature shots. On my camera right now is a Canon 50mm 1.4 prime (which I think everyone should have!) and I also carry my Canon 24-105 F/4L which I like to use for more formal sessions with clients.Feedback
Honestly, I think I have said this before, but, over thinking any shot will kill it. The best images are those in which we did not expect to capture or we were there at just the right time. There is no possible way I could have set this shot up. Not only would my kid refuse, but my dog would be confused and it would have been a mess. Personally, my favorite images are of moments that happen naturally, and if I am lucky enough, I get to be there with my camera and capture it. Even on shoots, I tell people, families, children, to pretend I am not there so I can see who they really are. Those are the best shots!
