Location
This photo was taken at the summit of Trail Ridge Road inside Rocky Mountain National Park. One great thing about this drive of going up and over Trail Ridge Road is you have a 90% chance of viewing Elk.Time
This was later in the day, probably around 5pm. Sun was coming in a deep angle and fog had settled in the valley.Lighting
Normally this time of day at this altitude it will be rainy. This day was different, sun was still out and bright. Although, there was heavy fog in the valley.Equipment
Sony A580; Sony kit 75 -300mm; Natural light, without a tripod. (This series of photos were taken hand held within a moving vehicle)Inspiration
We are both born and raised in Colorado, so Elk do not usually catch our eye. Although, this time was different the younger bull was doing something neither of us had ever seen before. He was resting, but he was laying down like a dog would. As you can see he had his chin on the ground, almost as if he was tired of holding up his antlers. (even though his are half the size of the older bull). We knew we had to get this captured, because we may never see it again; and we had no choice but to take these photos from our moving vehicle. The park was just to busy and the Rangers would not allow anybody to pull over.Editing
To the original photo, we did basic enhancement, brought out the detail a little and smoothed out the background. Then did the B/W conversion. We don't use photo-shop for our editing, we only use free photos apps on our iPads. ie. Snapseed & iPhoto. (We also used these photos to create a series of false reflections, called "Nature's Abstracts". These can also be viewed in our gallery.)In my camera bag
Sony A77, Sony A580, Sony kit 18-55mm, Sony kit 75 -300mm, Sigma 18 - 250mm, & Sigma 150 - 500mm. Tripod & assorted filtersFeedback
If something catches your eye, where maybe it normally would not, then you need to be shooting like crazy. If it caught your attention, it will probably catch the attention of others. And sometimes movement/blur is not a bad thing. The movement of the vehicle gave the background a very interesting feel, helped give the photo something extra.
