Location
This photo was taken at Cable Beach, Broome, Western Australia a few years ago whilst I was on holidays. It is a well known and well photographed beach where they have camel rides at sunset every night for the tourists. This particular night it was very busy and the people and the 4WD's, which are allowed on the beach, were getting harder to dodge to get the shot I wanted.Time
I decided to wait till the sun was almost gone and the tourists had thinned out a bit. I knew what sort of shot I wanted but decided that the last camel ride for the night departing would give a sense of closure to the night .I waited till the camels had gone past me and walked back so I could get the beautiful reflections in the sand.Lighting
I actually loved the fact that the beach looked empty and the fading sun on the horizon gave it a euphoric atmosphere, with the camels leading the eye away into the darkness.Equipment
I used a Canon 7D with a 10-22mm Canon lens mounted on a tripod.Inspiration
I had always wanted to go to Cable Beach to ride the camels off into the sunset, but as it turned out when I got there it was a lot busier than I imagined. The hardest thing was trying not to get run over by a 4wd. I would just set up my tripod and have everything ready and have to move because the car had left tyre prints in the sand right in front of me which I didn't want in my shot.Editing
I processed it in Aperture with very few adjustments. I lightened the exposure slightly, added a bit more saturation and then a vignette. In my camera bag
Now I have upgraded to a Canon 5D Mk111 but still use the the 7D occasionally. My main go to lens is a Canon17-40 and a 24-105. I have a 70-200 USM 2.8, and a 100-400 as well. While I have other specific lens for Macro ect, those are the ones I take with me all the time. I have a also invested in a Olympus OMD 1 mirrorless ,with wide angle, macro and telephoto lens but I haven't yet mastered it to use all the time.Feedback
If you love landscapes you'll love Broome, not just for the magnificent sunsets but all the great pristine beaches, and some of the most magnificent places to visit in the surrounding areas. Its amazing. Some of my best images were taken on this trip and I have plans to go back.
