Location
I live and work on a 11,000acre property west of Melbourne Australia where this photo was taken. I had decided to try my hand at night photography particularly trying to get the Milky way in the shot. Well after a good hour or so I managed to get some decent shots of the old shearing shed on the property and the night sky.Time
This was just after sunset when the sky was still bright and the benefit of living on such a big place is that you don't get interference from smog or other pollution. The light behind the trees on the right of the shed is a town about 35 minutes drive away which I thought added to the shot.Lighting
I used a torch during exposure for about 5 seconds to light the front of the shed to add a bit of interest to the shot.Equipment
It was taken on a Canon 5D mkIII with a Canon 16-35mm lens 2.8 on a tripod using a remote control trigger. It was a 30 second shot at 6.3, ISO 100.Inspiration
I have always wanted to try my hand at night photography but had never had the chance. This was a rewarding experience as it didn't take as much time to pick it up as I thought.Editing
Hardly any post processing except the usual exposure adjustment, cropping and a few other levels adjustments. In my camera bag
I now have a Canon 5DIII, IV and a new R6 which I use mainly for bird photography. The 16-35 lens for night photography and 24-105 for landscape, a 600mm for birds. I have numerous other lens but the ones mentioned are what I use most.Feedback
Preparation is the key to night shots because as I found out the hard way taking the shot is the easiest part its the preparation which is key. Don't forget your torch, a fold up seat and some warm clothes and plenty of patience.
