Behind The Lens

Location

O'reillys in the Australian Queensland hinterland. A quaint picnic spot teeming with life.

Time

Around 3pm. A hot day, damp from the rainforest humidity.

Lighting

The lighting was somewhat dark with streams of sunlight coming through the tree canopy.

Equipment

Camera was Nikons D800 coupled to a Sigma 150mm f/2.8 EX DG OS HSM APO Macro. Perfect range and enough sharpness to capture close range.

Inspiration

I love macro photography and Playing with depth. This was the perfect opportunity for a unique composition and the caterpillar played a fantastic model.

Editing

I increased exposure a notch due to the dark conditions and lifted Colours to bring out the striking contrast.

In my camera bag

I generally carry my Nikon d800. My sigma 150 and Nikon 200mm macro, along with a 14-24 Nikon wide to cover myself for a perfect sunset and dramatic shots. For lighting I carry a r1c1 flash system along with a manfroto tripod.

Feedback

It's all about keeping your model still. Not so easy so keep yourself as still as can be and click a lot of shots so you can choose the right one. Don't be afraid to get dirty, a macro photographer need to want to, and be happy to, roll in the mud and climb up a tree. Macro demands light so fit yourself with key lighting systems that can assure zero blur.
