This was not one of our planned stops as we were enroute to Lake Roberts, NM in the Gila National Forest. We stumbled upon the El Chino Strip mine with visitor overlook. The scene is pretty much as shot, the cheesy looking clouds are not Photoshopped in. The following is a description according to Wiki: El Chino, Spanish for the Chinaman, also known as the Santa Rita mine, is an open-pit copper mine located in the town of Santa Rita, New Mexico 15 miles (24 km) east of Silver City. The open-pit mining operation, which began in 1910, was once the worlds largest. It also holds the title of the third oldest open pit copper mine in the world. Santa Rita Chino Mine pit is almost 1,500 feet deep and 1-1-2 miles across. The haul trucks (black spot on road, bottom center) are almost 3 stories tall.
