With a little practice you can... the hardest part is finding a really good, dark area. I've had several shots ruined from campers shining their flashlights in my direction. But on average, each shot is about a 15-30sec exposure. Some cameras use the bulb exposure for this others a timer. A neat trick I learned is to place something in front of the lens (but not physically on it) when manually pressing the shutter release. After a sec or so move the object away from the lens. This will prevent any camera vibrations from affecting the image.
