The oriental fire-bellied toad is a colorful little toad that is camouflaged when seen from above but displays warning coloration when it feels threatened. The wrats of these species produce a toxin that can cause death or discomfort to larger animals. To humans it can cause sneezing and sore eyes if the toad is handled carelessly.
This species is found in open meadows, river valleys and swampy bush land of northeastern China, Korea and Primorye regions in Russia. The oriental fire-belied toad is generally threatened by habitat loss and degradation. In Russia, the collection of animals for traditional Chinese medicine might be a potential threat. Moderate numbers are exported, mainly to western Europe and North America in the international pet trade. Listed as Least Concern at the IUCN Red List in view of its wide distribution, presumed large population, and because it is unlikely to be declining fast.
