The origins of the Audi Type P make its story an interesting one in its own right, because it typifies the years of the Great Depression. Jörgen Skafte Rasmussen, founder of DKW, had acquired a majority shareholding in Audiwerke AG in 1928. In order to serve those customers who simply could not get used to DKW's unrefined two-stroke engines, Rasmussen had a four-cylinder, four-stroke engine fitted in the DKW 4=8 in the place of the V4 two-stroke engine. The engine came from the Peugeot 201. This DKW with Peugeot engine was then put onto the market as the Audi type P.
