I picked this mouth-watering fruit from our Suriname Cherry tree that I keep trimmed back to 8 feet, but if left untrimmed it would grow to 25 feet when mature.
The Suriname Cherry (Eugenia uniflora), also called Florida Cherry, pitanga, Brazilian cherry, Cayenne cherry, and cerisier carré, is a flowering plant native to tropical South America’s east coast, ranging from Suriname, French Guiana to southern Brazil. It is often used in gardens as a hedge or screen.
The edible fruit is a botanical berry. The taste ranges from sweet to sour, depending on the cultivar and level of ripeness (the darker red, purple to black range is quite sweet, while the green to yellow and orange range is strikingly tart). It is interesting to see all the different color ranges of the fruit on the tree at the same time. Its predominant food use is as a flavoring and base for jams and jellies. The fruit is high in vitamin C and a source of provitamin A.
I like to eat the red to purple melt-in-your-mouth fruits right off the tree!! They are bursting with flavor.
