The only chance to get my long desired milkyway shot during our family vacation on Tenerife was on the last night, when the moon rose late enough to have the core of the milkyway reasonably high enough in the sky.
While scouting my pre-planned locations i soon realized that these wouldn’t work because the mountains would block the relatively low hanging core shortly before the moonrise.
After photographing the scenery at the Teide (see last post) i hurried to a slightly elevated place and hoped for the best.
Standing all alone in the middle of nowhere, gazing at the bright stars and waiting in complete darkness for the milkyway to rise was a quite impressive experience.
Something i totally underestimated was the temperature drop to only 2 degrees Celsius at such a high elevation. I tried to keep myself warm with some exercises, but i was still freezing like a cow...
After taking this image being for hours in such great darkness i was dazzled by the moon when it peeked over the mountain crest and flooded the landscape with its light.
After all i am quite disappointed from the resulting image, seems like there’s no milkyway for me...

No milky way but still a stunning photo!
someday I shall buy a full frame camera to raise the iso without too much noise...
I have a nikon D90, this summer aI took a milky way in provence; south of france. One of the best place to stars gazing, we could see the milyway so clearly with the naked eyes every night! but my photos are not great at all... way too much noise!
See all
