The origins of the Bolhão Market, one of the most emblematic buildings of the city, dating back to 1839, when the House of Porto decided to build a square of land acquired to fit. In this place there was an extensive marsh, crossed by a stream that there formed a water bubble, which resulted in the name of the market, 'Bolhão'. A few years later, this square has been improved with the construction of access ramps and wooden stalls in the central market hall. Later, in the early twentieth century, the city leaders decided to build out of town a new market, to ensure the food supply for expansion of the city was then in 1910 came a preliminary draft of the architect Casimiro Barbosa, which provided a building with two wings, and the Sa Street Flag as central axis. But the project was abandoned for economic reasons and eventually be built in 1914, the current building, a project designed by the architect Correia da Silva. This was a work of avant-garde for the time, due to the use of reinforced concrete in conjunction with metal structures, roofs, wood and granite stone masonry. Throughout its history, the market has undergone some changes, occurring in the 40 the construction of the floor which divides the building, making the connection between the inputs Alexandre Braga and Sá da Bandeira street.
