During our visit to the Icefield Parkway, @matt_jackisch and I spent days driving up and down this stretch of road looking for good spots and hoping to get interesting conditions. On our first day, Matt had wanted to see Sunwapta Falls, which I was never really excited for. I had been there once before and found it very limited as far as compositions go… That said, I thought if we could get some unique conditions, we might be able to get something special… I’ve never been one to trophy hunt for photos, but I was intrigued by getting something special at this over shot spot.
We were just a few kilometres away, and the light was really starting to crack! About 6 kilometres from the falls, we passed this spot on the road and the conditions were extremely impressive, and Matt and I both looked at each other like “That looked amazing…Maybe we should stop?”… but I made the quick decision to push on to Sunwapta which was only a few minutes up the road. I had never seen a photo of Sunwapta with conditions like this and I was really excited to trophy hunt this shot…
Of course when we got there, there was no water flowing over the falls, the light was in the wrong direction and we were devastated by the decision we had made to keep driving… SO, we doubled back and of course, by the time we got back to the spot we had passed on the road, it was no longer blessed with that incredible light that we passed up. Fuck. I was extremely disappointed in myself. I knew better. I knew Sunwapta was underwhelming, I knew I shouldn’t trophy hunt and knew the spot we passed up was amazing. Fuck… FUCK. We made a pact to never drive past anything again. If someone said stop, we stopped immediately and shot what we could.
This was one of those spots that I said “I’m stopping!” It was right off the road and looked gorgeous. Even though this was midday, I fell in love with the area and really enjoyed these conditions. I felt like this might have made up for my lousy decision a couple days earlier. We visited this spot again on the last morning of our trip and witnessed a killer sunrise.
