Construction of the first Key West lighthouse began in 1825 near Southernmost Point. It was 47 feet tall and at the time was the tallest structure on the island. Then a hurricane destroyed it in 1876.
So they built another one, this time further inland, at its current location. They’d learned their lesson. The base’s walls were 4.5 feet thick and overall it was 60 feet tall. 20 years later, it was extended 20 more feet to make it more visible from the Florida Strait.
