The word "giraffe" comes from the Italian word giraffa which is taken from the Arabic word zarāfa , which in turn is taken from an African language. The Romans called the giraffe camelopardalis , which literally means "camel leopard". This name can still be found in Afrikaans ( kameelperd ) and in the past also in Dutch ( kameelpardel ).
An adult giraffe has a head-torso length of 3.5 to 4.8 meters and a tail length of 76 to 110 centimeters. Males generally grow larger than females. Females are generally 3.5 to 4.7 meters in height and 400 to 500+ kilograms in weight. Males are 3.9 to 5.2 meters high and 500 to 800 kilograms in weight. Exceptionally, a male can reach 5.5 meters in height.
