A 1-inch long tobacco hornworm (Manduca sexta) creeps along the leaves of a large tomato plant growing in a backyard in Oxnard, Calif. A pointy horn resides on its backside where a pattern of seven diagonal lines ends (four are shown here). I enjoyed the diversity of textures, shapes, and colors present on such a tiny creature.
