This beautiful old pier has been a recent subject of controversy. A part of it was damaged in a fire last year. The pier's owners decided to collect the insurance money and sell rather than restore it. The pier was purchased by an entrepreneur, Sheikh Abid Gulzar, who has attempted to make a few changes to this landmark, starting with installing a banner which reads 'Thank you for visiting Sheikh's Pier' technically changing its name from 'Eastbourne Pier' to 'Sheikh's Pier'. Mr Gulzar is also considering charging an entry fee in order to restore the fire-damaged landmark.
