When I got my first DSLR (Canon Rebel XSi) I was sorely disappointed with the lack of sharpness of the images it took. I took it back to Best Buy for a refund, but the sales guy that day was a photographer and he told me there was nothing wrong with the camera. It was the kit lens (actually it was more than that, i.e. my ignorance on how to use the camera). He suggested try a prime lens (the nifty fifty) Needless to say I did and was blown away. So I put the kit lens in the box and almost never used it again. Happy with the 50mm f/1.8 I decided to get a 85mm f/1.8 ... now I was happy. Until I wanted to photograph landscapes etc. So the moral of this story kept the kit zoom lens in you camera bag and learn how get the most out of it. Proper setting on your camera can yield very good results (F stop, shutter speed even with a f/3.5 - 5.618-55mm kit) .
