These are large red ants. Yes, I know, Small Things contest and all, though size is always relative. This is from my "Cheap Macro" lens, which is a plastic generic Jeweler's Loupe affixed to the end of my Sony Cybershot DSC-H90 Point and Shoot camera with a bit of silicone putty (from silicone earplugs.) These Red Ants make huge circles on the ground. Sometimes they mound, though they mostly make holes in the ground and push dirt out in a large circle. It's pretty cool to see. This time I was photographing the mound and after three days of off and on rain, even the queen decided to come up for air. Here she is, welcoming the giant human's strange glass eye.
