Storytelling nature Action photography. Taken from a hiding place within the small bird enclosure at a local zoo this portrait of a finch was a product of study and the timing of the light from the sun to produce an image with an oil painting like quality by using natural light and natural manipulation alone, no post processing , as it comes from the camera. I attempted this style of shot on this bird table after studying the time of day the sun crossed it producing the highest contrast in light and shadow and richest colours. Using my 70-300mm nikkor lens with macro techniques I revisited on several occasions to the same hiding spot in order to create a composition that focused on one individual bird with great expression in its face against an opulent , dark and dramatic blurred background similar to those painted by the old masters. Getting the opportunity to get this green bird in the right pose with the obscured figures of only yellow birds in the background was my intent because if I painted this natural wildlife scene this is the colour palette i would have chosen , with the reds and yellows of the background birds complementing and drawing out the ochre and red on the main subject for the viewing eye.
