Atmospheric Seascape Photography. 'Leviathan', is an apt title for this dramatic sunrise landscape for a number of reasons and I hope that the composition conjures up the symbolism of this impressionistic image . First, the large ferry ship heading off to Eire is one of those giants of the water often called leviathans by boat watchers. Second, it has been used often in literature to describe the magnitude of the Sea and Humankind's battles with it. Third, it has biblical significance, as God and the ferocious elements of the sky and sea are often compared in power and strength as mighty leviathans, and the cloud that seemed to engulf the dawn sunlight on the beach this morning , and seemed to be heading onward to consume the ship ( made tiny by the proportions of Mother nature) its jaws eager for every bite. I was quite awestruck as I watched this great mouth of floating air and water with the morning sun still blazing and trying to shine rays of safe passage to the boat below. The image was taken on one of my local beaches long before another soul stepped a foot upon the shore so I too felt as small and isolated as the ship on the water. The composition was chosen through pre planning as i know the beach well and had a good idea of where to stand to see the ship at this angle and to punctuate the scene with sand and rocks. I have taken a number of shots of the ferry leaving or arriving at the Port of Holyhead from this more secluded beach in various weather conditions but never expected that I would be lucky enough to get a cloud formation that could say so much. the image uses natural light and ground level perspective as manipulation of colour saturation and depth and no further editing was done.
