On my wishlist for our recent Acadia trip was rocky shores, and boy were they in plenty. Unfortunately, the weather was playing difficult for most of the trip with an almost consecutive week of hard overcast and rain. So, we turned to chasing animals when we could, and playing tourist at all the local seafood eateries. After making a day-trip out to the Bass Harbor Lighthouse and getting a feel for the terrain and shooting opportunities, we headed back that way on what was starting to look like a viable evening for a good, textured sunset.

Instead, when we got there, the heavy clouds were rolling back in and the overhead wisps were coalescing together for more overcast. Instead of waiting for true sunset, I instead waited just long enough for the sun to drop behind the lighthouse from my angle and cast a faint orange glow between the incoming and existing clouds. I threw on my ten-stop ND filter, plugged in some rough calculated exposure settings, and took a few shots. I was happy with what I had, so we left early on our way back to Bar Harbor, still under the last remnants of daylight.
