At Clonmacnoise (established circa 542 CE) there are many, many Celtic crosses. I never realized until I saw them up close, that they are a combination. A Christian cross, but decorated with Celtic (pagan) imagery. It was as if they weren't quite sure where to put their bets down, and so tried to keep one foot in each camp...
