Stum puffball is a fungi. It's a look-alike of the scleroderma citrinum. whereas the puffball (the apioperdon) has a single opening on top through which the spores are dispersed, the earthball (the scleroderma citrinum) just breaks up to release the spores.

These are edible when young (white, spongy and hard), sliced and quickly thrown on hot oil and some eggs... and if you are inclined to help them spread, pick the dried ones and "puff" the spores along the way as you walk. Next year you should be able to pick much more (cut underneath so as to leave the ground part unrooted!). Bon appetit! :)
